What is real is a century-old question, and one that has
never been given a defined answer.
Since the introduction of technology capable of imitating
and simulating reality the answer to this question has become a much greyer area.
In Mediamorphosis (1997) Roger Fidler states; “clearly,
reality is no longer as easy to define as it once was,” and we see this proved
with easy access to computer games and devices that can enable anyone to role
play ‘real life’. Players can race a sports car around the Nurburgring (Forza),
fight in military wars (Modern Warfare) or even get married, run businesses and
have babies (The Sims).
‘Digital Reality’ can be split into two separate forms;
Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR). Virtual Reality is the most
common conception of digital reality, where computers simulate environments and
situations that enable the player to simulate there existence in the virtual
worlds. Augmented Reality is slightly different; it uses real life elements
such as sensors, sound and GPS data to engage a player into a digital world.
